Caption:
A photograph of a Bugatti racing car being fuelled, taken by Harold Tomlin for the Daily Herald newspaper on 23 September, 1932. The Bugatti eight cylinder car was about to take part in a 500 mile race at Brooklands, Surrey. It was to be driven by Count Stanislas Czaykowski, the only foreign competitor. Opened in 1907, Brooklands was the first purpose-built motor-racing circuit in Britain. For three decades this famous track, with its characteristic banked corners, was the centre of British motor sport. Czaykowski was a wealthy, Paris-based Polish aristocrat. He was killed the following year when his Bugatti crashed during a race at Monza, near Milan, Italy. This photograph has been selected from the Daily Herald Archive, a collection of over three million photographs. The archive holds work of international, national and local importance by both staff and agency photographers.
